Ealing Council has appointed a new portfolio holder for prosperity, skills, employment and transformation.

Peter Mason, elected councillor for Elthorne ward in 2014, attended his first cabinet meeting on Tuesday 17 May 2016.

Mason, who previously chaired the health and adult social services scrutiny committee, succeeds Councillor Steve Hynes, who will now chair the council’s planning committee.

Mason said he hoped he would be able to make “a real difference to the lives of our residents”.

He added: “With major regeneration schemes, Europe’s largest industrial estate at Park Royal, the A4 corridor and Heathrow a stone’s throw away, there is no shortage of skilled, technical jobs on our doorstep.

“The challenge for the council is to work across the public sector with colleges, Job Centre Plus and other organisations to ensure our residents have access to the right training, education and opportunities to allow them to develop the skills they need to secure fairly paid work to support their families.”

The council also elected its new mayor.

Councillor Patricia Walker was formally appointed at the annual council meeting in Ealing Town Hall on Tuesday 10 May. She took over from Councillor Harbhajan Kaur Dheer.

As well as chairing meetings of the full council, the new mayor will undertake all civic ceremonial duties.
